A list of things I have given up trying to explain to people.

Inspired by the lovely Scout, this is a list of things I’ve given up trying to explain/worrying about.

1. Milla, at 21 months, has never slept through the night. She wakes at least once, much more if she isn’t sleeping next to me. This has led to much tiredness. But I love her just the way she is.

2. Feeling self-conscious about wearing the clothes I make. Either people are too polite to comment, or they don’t notice at all. Either way, I’m fine with that.

3. Being a little bit hurt when strangers tell me that my blue-eyed, blonde daughters look nothing like me. Hey! Ouch! But I take their point.

4. Preferring to read adolescent fiction over adult fiction. This started as legitimate research and professional interest but is now a genuine love. I just re-read Playing Beatie Bow by Ruth Park, a brilliant Australian author, and it still made me cry.

5. Why our cat is called Miew. Because it’s pretty obvious. Doesn’t make it any less embarrassing though.

    Hey there,
lovely post. I so agree with a few of those. (No cat called Miew though). I have a bookshelf full of adolescent fiction and my love of it is the same as yours! Started professionally but just love it really. Still indulge. I also have a non sleeper - or very occasional all night sleeper and he is 3 1/2! I really actually don’t care what the rest of the world thinks about it (most of the time!) He is lovely and sleeps pretty well in my thinking. Perhaps everyone else is just telling whoppers about their kids! Ditto with the home made clothes - mainly on my boy. I get some polite looks at times!
THanks for the realisation that I really have given up worrying about these things - maybe I should extend the list in my blog some time!

Playing Beattie Bow is still one of my favourite books so I’m with you in thinking that there is NOTHING wrong and A LOT right with enjoy YA fiction.

What a lovely blog you have!

And your Number 1: We waited for years - I think we got to 5 straight hours of sleep 4 days shy of Minnie’s 2nd birthday. Its still not certain if she will sleep all night and she is almost 4. And yes, although I have just done it here, re-telling this story to people does my head in! And yes, its a grand thing that we love her so very much.
